Hinged coil versus segment coil (half coil)

The videos were recorded in a Deutsche Bahn AG maintenance workshop.

The video on the handling of the hinged coil shows the execution of the magnetic particle testing on an axle shaft with mounted wheelsets. The difficulties in handling are easy to see. Disassembling the wheelsets would greatly simplify the test, but is too time-consuming.

In comparison, the video with the segment coil clearly shows that magnetic particle testing can be carried out much faster and with much easier handling with the half coil.

The half coil is a 180-degree magnetising device that can be moved very easily by mounting it on a portal frame.

By rotating the shaft, 100% inspection is guaranteed. The test system is supplied by the HELLING high-current generator HELLMAG 3300 Special.
