Reference Bodies and Test Blocks

Determination of sensitivity levels of fluorescent and colour contrast penetrant systems.
Four brass plates are coated with a 10, 20, 30 or 50 µm thick nickel-chromium-layer. Crack depths are defined by the thickness of the nickel-chromium-layer. Transverse cracks are produced through stretching of the plates in longitudional direction.
The relation crack width : crack depth is approximately 1 : 20 for each crack.

Austenitic basic plate, one part of which is chromed, and the other consists of four fields which have been provided with different surface roughnesses for control of interim cleaning.
At the backside of the chromed part five star-shaped crack centres of different sizes were generated through ball interserting. This side serves for control of test media.
Application
- Control of test media and control of interim cleaning
- NO proof of sensitivity of indications of the respective test medium

HELLING reference block NR-5 corresponds to reference block PSM-5 acc. to ASTM (TAM Panel 146040).
Rectangly-shaped stainless steel plate (4 x 6 inch) with a chromium stripe at one side and five crack centres sorted according to their size. The other side is sand-blasted (medium roughness).
Application
1. |
Side with crack centres: |
2. |
Sand-blasted side: Control of excess penetrant removal |
Not suitable for comparative tests with different test systems.
For each testing product family a separate reference block have to ap ply.
Reference block NR-5 fulfils as well as reference block PSM-5 the requirements of
- ASTM E1417 (§ 7.8.3.1)
- General Electric Specification P3TF2 (§ 5.4.1 and 10.1)
- MIL-STD 6866 (§ 5.8.3, 33B-11)
- NAVAIR 01-1A-16
- TM43-0103

Transparent template with black dot, circle and line marks for precise determination of sizes of indications for magnetic particle testing (black white method).
Application
Place the comparator onto defectice area of the test specimen. Comparison of indication with the markings of the comparator. Enables more precise determination of indication sizes.
