Image Quality Indicator
Detectability of details of a radiographic film essentially depends on the image quality of the radiographic film.
The different image quality indicators (IQI) and their application for determination of the image quality number are described in standards such as EN ISO 19232 "Non-destructive testing. Image quality of radiographs. "
IQIs are delivered together with a declaration of conformity (e.g. acc. to ISO/IEC-Guide 22)

- Seven parallel wires of different diameters
- Material: aluminium, titanium, steel or copper
- Length of the wires: 10, 25 or 50 mm
- Embedded in a transparent plastic covering (including indication of standard, number of thickest wire, material and length by white or non-ferrous metal symbols)
- Marked by batch number

Determination of image unsharpness
- 13 pairs of wires of decreasing wire diameter (1D - 13D)
- 1D - 3D consist of tungsten, the others are made of platinum
- Evaluation of X-ray films with magnifying glass (max. magnification 4x)
- Image unsharpness "U" is determined by the wire pair whose two wires can be recognised just disconnected
- Application in connection with IQI wire penetrameter or step/hole IQI is recommended
Element no. | Image unsharpness "U" | Wire Diameter = wire distance |
13D | 0.10 | 0.050 mm |
